Yik Mun Pau Halal at Tanjung Malim

December 12, 2015 by Apple Foodees Leave a Comment

It’s the school holidays. If you are going up north thru the North South Highway, consider making a short stop at Yik Mun – The Famous Halal Pau. Yik Mun is located at Tanjung Malim, a short drive of about 2 to 3km from the Tanjung Malim Exit. There are 4 types of flavors; Pau Ayam(Chicken Pau), Pau Daging (Beef Pau), Pau Kacang (Beans Pau) and Pau Kaya (Kaya Pau). Each pau is priced at RM2.20 each.

We tried their Pau Ayam which is basically pau filled with curry chicken. The curry chicken had quite a good blend of savory and sweet spices. It was quite fragrant and it pairs very well with the bland and texturally soft bun.

Roti Kahwin, toasted white bread with kaya and butter is the food you must order here. Somehow, I feel that this roti kahwin is very much better than the pau ayam. The white bread was lightly toasted and it had a crunchy texture. The mix of kaya and butter in between the white bread was evenly spread. This is a classic example of something that is so simple but taste good. This roti kahwin was priced at RM4.50.

There are many items on the menu and they are a good mix of Chinese and Malay dishes. This is Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM17.00 – tender and juicy chicken, savoury sauce with some peas and onion, mashed potatoes and bun at the side. The only other place that serves Hainanese chicken chop that I know of is Yut Kee in Kuala Lumpur. If I were to compare Yik Mun’s with that, I personally like Yik Mun’s version.

We also ordered the Ayam Goreng Berempah @ RM5.30. Crispy skin with good flavours but slightly undercook on the inside is how I would describe this ayam goreng berempah.

As we don’t come here often, we also ordered the Mee Kari @ RM8.50. It is basically yellow noodles with a handful of yong tou foo ingredients in a plate of curry sauce. If given the chance to turn back time, I wouldn’t have ordered this as I didn’t like the idea of having so much foo chuk (bean curd skin) in my curry. Taste wise, it was okay.

Here is Yik Mun’s menu. It is quite surprising that this coffee shop colour prints all their order slip and is very well equiped with an order button on each table. Even though this is just a coffee shop, it is a more high-tech coffee shop.

Yik Mun’s Famous Pau is available for purchase fresh and frozen. Coffee 3-in-1 packets are also available for purchase at the shop.
