Tanoshii Dezato has recently opened in Tropicana City Mall. Tanoshii Dezato, a Japanese dessert shop offers customize-your-own Taiyaki. Taiyaki is a Japanese fish cake dessert or snack. Taiyaki is a cross between a waffle and a cake which is normally filled with red bean paste that is made from sweetened azuki beans. Tanoshii Dezato took a step further by allowing customers to select from a variety of fruits, ice creams and stuffings for only RM12.80.
So why the fish shape and not any other shape?
Taiyaki when loosely translated from Japanese into English, it literally means “baked sea bream” – a type of fish. We were told by Alvina, the marketing manager of Tanoshii Dezato that there was a time when only the royal family could afford sea breams. Its subjects then came out with a look-a-like sea breams using flour, milk, egg and etc. And that’s how the Taiyaki dessert came about.
Ordering a Taiyaki is simple. Just 3 steps involved.
On the first look, the instruction on its menu looks kinda funny as the steps are to be read from bottom to top. But I kinda get it. You may order it any sequence you like. Choose your stuffing, ice cream flavor and fruit. Currently, there are 4 flavours for stuffing – Red Bean, Green Tea, Chocolate and Custard. For ice cream, they have Green Tea, Chocolate, Vanilla and Black Sesame. For fruits, there are only Strawberry, Banana, Kiwi and Peach.
If you have trouble deciding which toppings and stuffings match with each other, you could also order Tanoshii Dezato signatures.
Here, you could see the whole process how your taiyaki is made. The regular pancake or waffle batter is first poured into a fish-shaped mold on each side. The filling is then put on one side before the mold is closed.
Once the batter turns golden brown, it is then removed from its mold. The sides are then cut to form the shape of a fish.
Your selected ingredients are then assembled onto the taiyaki and there you go, your very own customized taiyaki.
You may also purchase Tanoshii Dezato’s premium ice creams separately at RM7.00 per scoop.
Taste wise, it taste just like any other waffles you have out there. The only difference here is that you get more ingredients instead of flour. Their premium ice creams, especially the double Belgium flavoured chocolate and Black Sesame is very good. It can get very messy when the ice cream melts but overall, the taiyaki is good.
So head over to Tropicana City Mall and get yourself a Japanese fish cake, Taiyaki at Tanoshii Dezato.
