Recently, I have been going to Kampung Baru quite a lot. There are many good Malay restaurants in Kampung Baru and in my very limited search for good Malay food, Rosdet Tomyam Restaurant is one of the best I’ve tried here.
One thing I notice at any Malay restaurants which is seriously lacking in other restaurants is fast service. It took only about 10 minutes upon order for our food to arrive at our table. Drinks came even earlier – only a few minutes.
This is Clams cooked with Rosdet’s special spicy sauce (Lala Masak Pedas) for RM6.00. The clams were not exactly fresh but the spicy sauce was very good. If the clams were fresh, it would definitely taste better.
The fish buried underneath those leafy vegetables is a “Kembong” fish. Upon the recommendation by a restaurant staff which took our order, we ordered the Kembong cooked with Rosdet’s special sauce. It was spicy and sweet at the same time, almost like a Thai dish.
These BBQ Cockles / Kerang Bakar @ RM5 are not exactly huge in terms of its size, but were quite good. The cockles on its own were quite bland and it pairs very well with the nutty, salty and sweet sauce served alongside this dish.
Since Rosdet specialises in tomyam, ordering a tomyam dish is a no brainer. This is Rosdet’s Seafood Tomyam @ RM6. There are other sizes available here but we opted for the small one in order for us to try out the many other dishes available here. It doesn’t taste exactly like a Thai tomyam but more towards a tomato based spicy soup. It was rich and quite spicy.
The Fried Egg / Telur Dadar was quite good as well. Quite oily but very fragrant.
Flavourful and crunchy stir-fried asparagus with prawns and onions for RM10.00 only.
If you have room for desserts, you should try the Mango Sticky Rice with Coconut sauce. It’s RM6.00 for three sticky ball rice with half a mango and coconut sauce.
Overall, we were quite pleased with our meal. I would most definitely recommend this Malay restaurant to anyone who wish to have a good decent Malay meal in KL.

best food ever in Kampung Baru
Hi I used to live in Kampung Baru from 1987- 1992. Im from Pakistan. My father worked in the Pakistan High Commision, which was a ten minuet walk from Kampung Baru we used to cross the river and cut through the cementary yo get there. We used to live in the PKNS flats. There were six other families from the High Commision that lived there. Im happy to find out Kampung Baru still has kept its tradition. Ive lived in different countries and am setteled in New York now. But Malaysia has a special place in my heart. I love the people and everything about Malaysia. I really miss it. I love the food. My favourite day was Saturday because there used to be a Saturday market and i would buy Murtabak my absolute favourite.
Down stairs in front of the flats were food stalls and i loved roti canai and the tea they used to sell in plsstic bags. I miss nasi lemak the sambal with anchovies mmmm. WE attended alot of weddings while there and i used to look forward to eating Rendang nothing compares to it in the whole world. I remember the boiled egg they used to give in a ceramic swan at the weddings. I liked the Ramli burgers. Pisang goreng cendol drink. I even liked durian. My favourite fruits were mangosteen and rambutan. Every food tasted unique and its the best good ever. I’ve tried Malaysian restuarants here in NY but the dont have the flavors that are there ofcourse. Hopefully im planning to visit KL and especially Kampung Baru with my wife and kids.So yhry can experience what ive experienced.
Truly there is no place like Malaysia in the whole world. I consider the people living there really lucky to be living in such a blessed place.
I came across this great blog and really started missing KL all over again.
Thank you Shereen take care and God Bless You.
Thank you for reading my blog.
You should come back for a visit. It’s relatively cheaper now considering the exchange rate between US dollar and Ringgit Malaysia.
Msia has changed a lot over the years. Come visit Malaysia when you have the time.
I will definately
