There are not many choices of Nyonya food in KL town. And Lima Pulo is one of it. LimaPulo is a Nyonya restaurant located at The Row along Jalan Doraisamy. If you do not know where Jalan Doraisamy – The Row is, just look for Sheraton Hotel at Jalan Sultan Ismail. Jalan Doraisamy is the small lane beside Sheraton Hotel.
The exterior of LimaPulo looks like any other normal restaurant. But LimaPulo’s interior resembles an olden day coffee shop, using only olden days furniture – wooden tables and colourful metal chairs, and old random stuff as decors – old suitcases, some very unique black and white paintings of beautiful ladies with red lips, an old Pepsi wooden tray and etc.
The colourful “thing” hanging on the wall here sure does looks like an old board game, but I’m not sure. If it is a picture, it is an odd one. What do you think that is?
Let’s move on to the food. When you go to a Nyonya restaurant, it is a no brainer that you will order the Nyonya Laksa, correct? However, you should be surprised to know that LimaPulo only serves Nyonya Laksa on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Other days, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Mee Siam is available. It is very unfortunate for us that we didn’t get to try their Nyonya Laksa as we have heard good reviews about it.
Even the Mee Siam was almost sold out for the day. We were told that the Mee Siam was the popular dish for lunch. The idea that Mee Siam was actually prepared in the morning for the lunch crowd did not deter us from ordering it. It was the best dish we had that night. The bihun wasn’t too dry and was slightly sweet and spicy. The accompanying sauce was quite sourish. It tasted similar to the asam fish sauce.
The cincaluk egg was thinly fried and though you won’t be able to find a lot of cincaluk, it was flavourful. There is nothing wrong with this dish except that it could do better with more cincaluk.
Cucur udang wasn’t a very good one. There were too much tofu and flour coated stuff. And I’m very sorry to say this – soggy, clumpy and geli is how I would describe this dish.
If I were to visit LimaPulo in the future, I would make sure that I only come on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Nyonya Laksa is an authentic Nyonya food and should be available every day in a Nyonya restaurant. LimaPulo should consider serving Nyonya Laksa every day and scrap the other not so good food in their menu.
