Ishin Japanese Dining, a Japanese restaurant at Old Klang Road is having a special “uni” menu and below are some of the dishes we had where uni is used.
If you do not know what “uni” is, “uni” is the edible part of the sea urchin. It is a seasonal and very expensive ingredient. It normally comes in boxes just like the one shown above, all properly harvested, cleaned and ready-to-eat.
As for the taste of uni, the taste changes depending on the season. If it is harvested during winter or taken from colder waters, it will be less buttery, sweet and slightly more firm. If it is harvested during spring, it will be more buttery.
Before this, I didn’t know that there are many ways to enjoy uni. As far as I know, the best way to enjoy uni is by having it raw or sashimi style. So I was pleasantly surprised with our dinner that evening.
To start our course that evening, we had the appetizer, Hokkaido Uni Ohitashi @ RM32. You can’t see the sea urchin here as it was wrapped with salad and chinese cabbage with edible flower.
Next came our Hokkaido Uni Sakana Osuimono @ RM58, a clear soup with uni embedded into the soft tofu with mushrooms.
Hokkaido Uni Sashimi @ RM58 is the best way to taste the uni sashimi on its own. Just add a little bit of wasabi on it and wrap with with a sheet of nori or seaweed.
If you don’t like your uni raw, you may try the Hokkaido Uni Hotate Tempura @ RM78. This dish is made of uni and shiso leaf sandwiched in between two scallops and lightly fried with tempura flour.
Hokkaido Uni Kuruma Ebi Teriyaki @ RM78 is a combination of grilled tiger prawns with uni as garnish. The heat from the grilled tiger prawns partially cooked the uni. The additional uni in this dish definitely elevated this already expensive and premium ingredient.
Hokkaido Uni King Crab Teppanyaki @ RM118 is a combination of king crab with uni. This dish just blows my mind. Who would have thought that King Crab can go so well with uni.
This special uni menu is definitely not cheap but if you can afford it, by all means, try some of them, if not all of them. If I have to pick one or two favourites, the Hokkaido Uni Kuruma Ebi Teriyak and Hokkaido Uni Hotate Tempura are both my obvious picks.
