Ikan Bakar or Grilled Fish is a Malaysian dish where fish are grilled with banana leaves before a charcoal fire or on hot plates. Ikan bakar is a very popular dish in Malaysia and you can find it almost everywhere in every state. Ikan Bakar are usually sold by street vendors.
Fresh fish is first marinated in spices and most of the time the fish is marinated with fish curry powder and is immediately placed on a banana leaf and then on a hot plate. Once the fish is cooked, it will then be transfered on a plate to be served with sambal kecap. Sambal kecap is basically grinded spice mixture made of chilis, lime juice and salt with raw red onions.
Seri Banjar which is located at Medan Selera Selayang in Selayang, Selangor is known for its ikan bakar. There are many types of fish available here and each and every fish differs in price. The price of a serving depends on the type of fish and its weight. We ordered the stingray fish or ikan pari which is priced at MYR5.00 per 100gm. The texture of the stingray fish is quite soft and if overcooked it will become mushy. If you like the texture of a fish to be flaky, do order something else, like the red snapper or tilapia. Our stingray for two person weighs about 300gms and is priced at MYR15.00.
Another must order dish is their Kam Heong Lala with Winged Beans. One thing that is different between this Malay kam heong dish is that no tiny shrimps were added to make the dish fragrant. This kam heong lala with winged beans are stir-fried with chili paste, sweet sauce and etc. The lalas were fresh and I based on the overall texture and taste of the dish, I think that this is the best dish of the night. This dish is priced at MYR10.00.

Curry Squid or sotong kari with winged beansis also one of the favourite dish here. It is basically squids stir-fried with curry powder, chili paste, sweet sauce and salt. The curry squid that we had that night wasn’t very good as the curry powder taste over powered the whole dish. A plate of curry aquid with winged beans costs about MYR 10.00.
Kailan with Oyster sauce is also one of my favourite dish. It was cooked just right. It was sweet and salty at the same time and the best part is that it was still crunchy when it arrived on our table. A great dish to mellow down the other spicy food we ordered that night. A plate of kailan with oyster sauce is priced at MYR8.00.
