I recently did a search around town to check out the best curry fish head.
And this is what I found:
There are two broad versions of curry fish head, the mamak version and the Chinese version.
The mamak versions are more sourish compared to the Chinese version which is savory and sweet.
Though you may find curry fish head in almost every Chinese restaurants in town, not all is good.
I’ve been going to a few different places and when I finally found a good one, the next time I went there, the curry fish head tasted different. In other words, they did not maintain the standard that they had set earlier.
Ah Go Go is a restaurant which specialises in curry fish head. A quick search on the internet would reveal Ah Go Go is the place to go for curry fish head in Kepong.
Their signature dish is the fish head curry @ RM32.00 for two persons. They use pieces of fried fish with various veggies cooked in coconut curry and served in a clay pot. Some semi-raw cockles are served together with the curry.
Ah Go Go fish head curry used to be very good. Sad to say that, the quality has dropped since they shifted from the shop at Jalan Kepong (next to Hing Kee Bak Kut Teh) to the corner shop at Plaza Prima Apartment at Jalan Metro 1, Kepong.
The coat around the fish was too thick and it got soft and lumpy when soaked in the curry for too long. The curry was too diluted to my liking. It wasn’t spicy enough in my opinion.
Their fried squid coated with salted egg @ RM18.00 tasted alright but the pieces were all lump and stuck to one another.
Ah Go Go needs to do better if they want to stay ahead in the game. They have set the bar very high for fish head curry previously. The number of customers that night is a clear indication that the quality has dropped. I hope they would do whatever they have to do to make their fish head curry better.
