Malaysia Food Blog – Apple Foodees

Malaysia Food Blog: Apple Foodees’ gastronomic adventures on Malaysian food & astounding travel experiences.

We were in Malacca recently for a short trip for the long weekend holiday. Even though we have been to Malacca so many times, there are just so many eateries that we have not been to. Like any other tourists, we took some time to do some research before embarking on our trip.

The internet is loaded with many suggestions pointing towards the usual “tourist spot” which we told ourselves that we are not going to step into any of these places anymore simply because the waiting time is just too long. We trust that there are many more hidden eateries around Malacca which begs for more people to discover. VK found a place (recommended by other bloggers) which serves good satays, so we decided to try it. However, we were disappointed as by the time we got there, we were told that they are finished for the day. It was only 1.30pm and they were finished for the day. There are only two reasons why they are finished for the day. One, they didn’t prepare enough to cater for the larger crowd; and two, they are really that good that they managed to sell everything in such a short time. Since, they were still barbecuing for some apparent “early orders”, I guess the reason is because their satays are really that good.

East & West Rendezvous

We walked around to look for other good stuffs around that area and settled with East & West Rendezvous for some Nyonya Cendols. I had had the best cendol in Malacca, Aunty Koh’s cendol at Bukit Rambai, so I didn’t have much expectation on East & West Rendezvous’ version of Nyonya Cendol. I was pleasantly surprise that they serve really good Nyonya Cendol. It was made according to traditional recipe using only 100% pure gula Melaka. Other cendols doesn’t use pure gula Melaka, I wonder. If you are not too keen to travel to Bukit Rambai for Aunty Koh’s cendol who is by the way, the best cendol I had ever had, you can settle for this one instead. Here, they don’t drown your cendol with gula Melaka like some others do. Don’t worry about the ingredients in the cendol just because you can’t see it here, they have the usual stuffs; i.e. cendols, kidney beans, nuts, and etc…They are loaded with it.

Malacca Nyonya Cendol

Malaccan are very friendly people. We were seated with two locals and knowing that we are not very familiar with the local’s choice of food here, they recommended us to try East & West RendezvousNyonya Pulut Rice / Nyonya Jang. Since, the locals love this very much and every patron ordered it, we decided to try one. The Nyonya Jang was very fragrant. It was filled with dried shrimps, mushroom and pork cooked with sambal and spices. You simply must try this when you are in Malacca – very recommended.

Fried Oyster Omelette at Sin Yin How, Lorong Hang Jebat, Malacca

Posted by Apple Foodees On February - 14 - 2012

It’s Valentine’s Day and how was your evening? I didn’t go anywhere as the timing is not right. Traffic jams, queuing to buy movie tickets and bad dinner service could ruined any date on this day. So I chose to celebrate Valentine’s Day last weekend on Sunday. We had a wonderful steamboat which I will share in my next post, so back to the main food I want to talk about here.

Last week, I had a short trip to Malacca again. Malacca is one of the Malaysia‘s best place to be as the people are not only friendly, it is located only a couple of hours away from the busy and bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Fried-Oyster-Omelette

Fried Oyster Omellete@ RM8, although you can get it anywhere in Malaysia, is considerably quite popular among the locals here. So if you are visiting Malacca, oyster omelette is something you must have. One that I would recommend you to try is the Fried Oyster Omelette stall located in Sin Yin How Restaurant.

Duck Mee is one of my favourite noodle while I was studying in Malacca. So when Vk suggested to go to Malacca for a trip, I told him that we must make a stop at Bukit Beruang for my duck mee.

Duck.Noodles

Here, you may order the dry version – black “kicap” style or like us, the soup version. I personally prefer the soup version more because of it’s broth. It tastes similar to the Mamee duck flavour instant noodle, except this is much better.

The duck mee stall has moved to another coffee shop since my pre-University time. Now they are located at Chia Yean Coffee Shop and here is their GPS coordinate: N2 14.779 E102 16.489.

If you are willing to travel to find good food, you may want to travel to Bukit Rambai for cendol. I know, Bukit Rambai is not exactly near Malacca town, but I have seen people travelling all the way from Singapore and Johor to Bukit Rambai, Malacca to have Aunty Koh‘s cendol.

The queue was very long and the tables and chairs were all taken up when we arrive at Aunty Koh’s stall. So we told ourselves, this could be good.
