Steamboat Restaurant Hao Jie, Kepong

Posted by Apple Foodees On February - 21 - 2012

Any steamboat “makan” session will not be good if the ingredients are not fresh. What differentiate from one steamboat restaurant to another is it’s ingredients. For a long time, I have been to many steamboat restaurants around Kepong and so far the best for me is Happy City Steamboat Restaurant. Today, I have found another close competitor to Happy City, that is Hao Jie Steamboat Restaurant, which is located further down the street from the former.

Steamboat Ingredients

Without wasting much time, I’ll just dive into the best part of our seafood ingredient first. Hao Jie Steamboat Restaurant serves really Fresh Crabs (with crab roe). Hao Jie’s crab roe are much cheaper compared to Ho Ho Steamboat at Segambut. Look at the beautiful bright orange coloured roes.

White Pomphret Fish was also fresh that day and we decided to order one. Our fish was priced at RM18, a 100gram for RM6. Even though the fish was very fresh, I didn’t enjoyed it as much as the crabs. I guess, steamboat is not the correct way to enjoy this fish. It should instead be steamed lightly with soya sauce and ginger.

The Scallops was one of the first that caught our eye on the menu. Priced at RM12 a plate of 4 scallops, I thought they were overpriced. But after having it, it was worth the price as the scallops were very sweet and fresh. I enjoyed every bite of it.

To make the soup taste better, we also ordered a plate of thinly sliced pork. The pork wasn’t seasoned at all, so don’t expect much from this.

Since we ordered many side ingredients, we only ordered 1 individual steamboat set, which comes with the common ingredients like prawns, fish slices, touhu, vegetables and etc. An individual set is priced at RM15 a set.

If you are looking for a good steamboat restaurant, this is the place to be. Not only the ingredients were reasonable priced, the seafood was really fresh as well. We were told by the lady boss that they replenished their ingredients every day and their seafood is stocked up, fresh from Pulau Ketam every single day. So I suppose, there’s no reason for any seafood poisoning here.
