There had been a lot of talks about the Japanese tarts and when we went to Ipoh a few weeks back, even the people in Ipoh are also talking about it. We managed to speak with the man behind Hong Kee Confectionery – the guy who is in charge of one of the best egg tarts in Ipoh and he also are surprised with the price of each Japanese tarts sold in Kuala Lumpur.
He laughed that for a RM7.95 Japanese tart you can buy in KL, you could get half a dozen of local egg tarts from him. We told him that almost everyone in KL is doing the Japanese tarts including those aunties you see in pasar malam and asked him whether he is interested to do it in Ipoh. But he said he’d rather stick to what he do best, the local egg tarts.
Hong Kee Confectionery egg tarts are made fresh everyday. We were told that he woke up at 3.00am every morning to prepare and bake everything before opening his stall at Kedai Kopi Weng Seng at about 7.00am to 7.30am everyday, except on Fridays. His egg tarts is very popular among the locals and will finish selling before 12.00pm everyday.
You may either have it with some coffee or tea at this coffee shop or get a to-go box. Hong Kee Confectionery also sells other stuffs like Swiss Roll and Sachima. Come early if you do not wish to miss out on these freshly baked egg tarts.
