From pasta to pizza Fratello Italiano Ristorante’s comprehensive menu of authentic Italian food is designed to be shared among family and friends. But before we go into that, let’s take a look at their appetizers.
For appetizer, we had Fratello’s Rocket Leaf Salad with Tapenade and Pecorino Cheese with rocket leaves (left) and Grilled Eggplant with Mozarella Cheese and Parmesan Cheese (right).
Even though the grilled eggplant may look like a mess here but I tell you, it is very good. If you don’t like rocket salad because it is bitter, don’t worry about that. The rocket salad pair very well with the sweetness of the grilled eggplant and salty Mozarella and Parmesan cheese.
Bruschetta Three Ways is a good appetizer to sample bruschetta with 3 different flavours. I think comes in tomatoes, mushrooms and rocket salad. This is a good appetizer to open your palate to more goodness to come.
All Fratello Italiano’s Pizza are made fresh upon order with their secret homemade dough recipe. This 16 inch thin-crusted Famiglia Pizza is big enough to feed about 4 to 6 persons.
Since it is quite difficult to show you how big this pizza really is, I’ve taken another shot with an iPhone 7 Plus at the side as comparison. It is huge right? It takes up the space of the whole table that we had to leave the pizza on a table next where we were sitting. The pizza was good with lots of ingredients and cheese.
As for pasta, Fratello’s pasta are also handmade fresh. Even though the pasta are colorful, they are made with natural colourings and no artificial colourings and no preservatives are added. Ingredients such as beetroot, spinach, chilies and squid ink are used as natural coloring. Beetroot=purple. Chilies=red. Spinach=green. Squid ink=black. Can you guess what they use to make yellow pasta?
Since the pasta are handmade, they are made into different shapes and sizes depending on your preference. We had the tortellini. The skin is a little too thick but each tortellini is loaded with a sizeable amount of ingredients. Fresh herbs and other flavorings help made the tortellini a commendable dish.
If you like spicy food, then you should try this Angel Hair Pasta with Fresh Water Prawns. It was a little spicy and garlicky but not overpowering. But I prefer the lamb shank more.
The Lamb Shank Milanese style comes in a huge portion, big enough to be shared with another person. The meat was juicy and tender on top of a bed of smooth and soft mashed potatoes. Not sure what they meant by “Milanese style” but this “Milanese” flavor/cooking is quite good. Just a whole lot of awesomeness that goes into this dish. Highly recommended for meat lovers.
If you prefer seafood, the Pan-fried Sea Bass Fillet with dill sauce was good as well. But if I compare this with the lamb shank, cannot fight lah.
The homemade assorted flavours of Gnocchi aka potato flour dumplings in Arrabiata sauce is a new addition to Fratello’s menu. If you never had gnocchi before, the texture is quite chewy. And since gnocchi is made of a combination of flour and potatoes, this dish alone is enough to fill your hungry stomach up.
Your Italian meal wouldn’t be complete without a slice of Tiramisu cake. The tiramisu cake though wasn’t the best I’ve had but it was good.
Lastly, to end you meal the “gwai lou” / westerners’ style, get yourself a cup of coffee. Nothing fancy, just a good ol’ cup of coffee with milk and sugar.
Back to my earlier question to you above. What is the ingredient they use to make the yellow colored pasta?
