Hakka Mee – Chun Kee at Jalan Sayor, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur

Posted by Apple Foodees On March - 18 - 2012

Tuck Cheong Dim Sum was our first and only choice for breakfast that day. However, as we were there after 9.00am, there were nothing left of us to try, except for some siu mais and buns. So we looked into our GPS device and found Chun Kee, a Hakka Mee stall located at Jalan Sayor. It is located just a few meters from Tuck Cheong Dim Sum, so we took a short walk over to Chun Kee. When we arrive at Chun Kee, there were a whole lot of people waiting. Some were ordering take-aways and some were waiting for their hakka mee to be served. Seeing this, we thought to ourselves, this could be a good find.

However, our expectation falls short. After waiting for 30 minutes, we find ourselves served with some dry, lumpy noodles. The minced meat portion was too little. It was simply insufficient to mix with the noodles. The only way to enjoy this hakka mee is to put more pepper and to have it with some green chillies.

The wanton soup was alright but it can be better if the soup wasn’t too salty. A reduction in the amount of MSG would be good too.

Pinang Lanta Seafood Steamboat Restaurant at Kepong

Posted by Apple Foodees On March - 12 - 2012

Last week was a very hectic week. The weather wasn’t very good too. It rained so heavily that many parts of Kuala Lumpur were flooded. Since it was a rainy season, again, we found ourselves hunting for steamboat restaurants. So we were to Pinang Lanta Seafood Restaurant. Pinang Lanta Seafood Restaurant is not only a normal seafood restaurant, but here they also serves steamboat.

The ingredients served here are quite different from the other steamboat restaurants in Kepong. I suppose the suppliers that they use are not the same as the rest. Compared to their neighbour Happy City, Penang Lanta Seafood Restaurant seafood ingredients are fresh, but not the freshest that you can find here. It was nevertheless good enough.

There are a number of choices of soup base. Looking through the menu, we decided to go with something different from the common plain chicken stock soup, the Garoupa and Yam Soup for RM16.90. There are many pieces of garoupa fish fleshes which we didn’t expect at all. For only Rm16.90 a person for garoupa base soup, this is one of the best soup bases I find in a steamboat restaurant.

Malaysia’s Best Restaurant – Top Hat Restaurant at Jalan Stonor

Posted by Apple Foodees On March - 8 - 2012

I was studying in Cyberjaya a few years back and had several times come across Top Hat Restaurant but never once step foot on this restaurant (because it was just too expensive for a student). Today, I still feel the same. No student or at least many students can’t afford luxury food like Top Hat everyday. Now that I am no longer a student and is now working like every other adults working like crazy everyday, VK and I decided to treat ourselves at Top Hat. Since Cyberjaya is way too far away from Kepong, we decided to go to Top Hat’s main branch at Jalan Stonor, Kuala Lumpur.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted with many framed-up certificates awarded by Malaysian Tatler to Top Hat Restaurant for being Malaysia’s Best Restaurant for the year of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007. That’s five consecutive years in a row. Not only that, there are many framed-up old newspapers and magazine reviews about Top Hat too. The combination of all these made me wonder why I didn’t come to try this place earlier.

Signature-Top-Hats

Top Hat Restaurant serves classic Western dishes with a subtle touch of Asian flavours. One of their signature dishes is their vegetarian Signature Top Hats priced at RM10 for half a dozen. It looks just like the Pai Tees in the Chicken Rice Shop except here; the vegetables are placed in “hats” instead on a “bowl” or “basket”.

Panfried Norwegian Salmon with Lime Leaf Sauce

I wanted to order their Grilled Chicken with Lentil Rice, Spinach Salad with Yogurt Dressing, but chicken dishes were not available that day. So I ordered their Panfried Norwegian Salmon with Lime Leaf Sauce for RM65.00. The salmon was served with mashed potato & sweet potato and some saute baby french beans with lemony dressing. The salmon was very good but a little bit too dry. I love the mashed potato. It was soft and tasty.

Set Menu - Rib Eye

VK ordered their Set Menu which comes with a bowl of Wild Mushroom Soup, a main course – Char Rib Eye, dessert – Signature Tiramisu Cake and Coffee/Tea for RM108.00. The Char Grill Rib Eye is served with saute vegetables and cepe mushroom sauce. The Rib Eye was good. It was very juicy and tender.

Signature Tiramisu Cake

For desserts, VK ordered Top Hat’s Signature Tiramisu Cake. This is by far, one of the best tiramisu cakes we had. Strawberry jams were laid on the plate as spreads to make this cake taste even better. It was not too sweet. It was crunchy at the side. It was very fulfilling. I absolutely love this piece of cake. And we were very lucky that day as we took the last piece, so I guess this is a favourite for many Top Hats’ patrons.
