Malaysia Food Blog: Apple Foodees’ gastronomic adventures on Malaysian food & astounding travel experiences.

Archive for October, 2011

It is not easy being a food blogger. The most difficult part is to find good post to be used as a topic. Yes, Malaysia is blessed with good and affordable food but I can honestly say here that I do not know much to enjoy the great food we have here in Malaysia. So the best way to discover great food still comes by the old fashion way which is by word of mouth.

I have heard about Keong Kee through a forumer one day but was quite skeptical about it as he mentioned that they serve great soup and wild boar curry. I remember asking myself. Soup? How great could that taste? Trusting his words, we went all the way to Kuala Lumpur that very night to try it out.

Pigeon.Herbal.Soup

It turns out that this is our greatest find yet. The soup they served here are double-boiled, securing every flavour and every taste. It is just amazing. One thing I find interesting here is their Pigeon Herbal Soup. They added a whole pigeon in it.

Herbal.Soup.in.Coconut

The soup I love the most would be their Herbal Soup properly sealed in a Coconut.

Wild.Boar.Curry

The second best item I love here is the Wild Boar Curry. There is only one word that can be used to describe this dish – SPECTACULAR. The texture of the meat was just great. It wasn’t too tough and it wasn’t too soft. It was just right on the dot. The sweetness of the curry goes really well with the wild boar meat.

Salted.Vegetable.with.Three.Layered.Pork

Moving on to the Salted Vegetable with Three Layered Pork, this dish is best had with rice. The pork just melts in our mouth. I loved it. This is a must ordered dish here.

Heng Bak Kut Teh at Taman Kepong

Posted by Apple Foodees On October - 18 - 2011

There are many Bak Kut Teh restaurants around Kepong and Heng Bak Kut Teh is one of the best I have been to. Located at Taman Kepong Heng Bak Kut Teh has been around since 1963. Honestly, I have been staying here since 1980s and I really didn’t know that Heng BKT exists until VK brought me here one day. I guess they just moved to Kepong not too long ago.

Bak-Kut-Teh

Heng’s Bak Kut Teh favourite would be their “Sang Kuat Pou” priced at RM12.00. Sang Kuat Pou is a cooking style and in short, it basically means that the cook prepares your bak kut teh fresh from stratch upon order. This way, you can be assured that your bak kut teh is fresh unlike most bkt restaurants around which prepares their meat earlier. So if you are planning order this, remember to call them up and pre-order a bit earlier to avoid waiting for too long.

Dried-Bak-Kut-Teh-top-view

Stewed Bak Kut Teh, priced at RM12.00, is also one of my favourite dish here. The meat is so tender and the kuah goes really well with rice. Although the meat is a little bit fat, it was so delicious that we polished it off within minutes.

Okuchi Japanese Restaurant at Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara

Posted by Apple Foodees On October - 11 - 2011

We were shopping at Sunway Giza Mall, Kota Damansara when we met a friend who then recommended us to try Okuchi, a Japanese restaurant for dinner. Okuchi is just a short walk from Sunway Giza Mall and it is located strategically in the middle of Dataran Sunway.

salmon.sashimi

VK, as usual ordered his Salmon Sashimi. This beautifully decorated sashimi was very fresh. I find the portion for this is a little bit too small. I guess good stuffs only comes in small portion. That way, we tend to treasure it more.

soft.shell.crab.sushi

Our order, Soft Shell Crab Sushi comes next. In contrast to salmon sashimi, the soft shell crab isn’t soft at all. It was really crunchy in the middle.

soft.shell.crab

We also ordered another version of the soft shell crab which was the Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab with Mayonaise. Like the earlier one, the soft shell crab was really good. Really crunchy.

meat.balls

Afraid that he might get hungry later, VK also ordered their meatballs. Personally, I find the texture of the meat balls a little bit too soft. It will be better if it was a bit more chewy. Sad to say, after a few bites, we got tired of it.
