Nasi Lemak is one of the favourite food of any Malaysian and there is no doubt about that. The star of the dish is the sambal aka chili paste plus some secret ingredients. It is not easy to find nasi lemak in England. The only cheapest place that serves nasi lemak is at our very own Malaysian Hall in London. It is priced at £4.00 which comes up to about RM24.00 for a normal nasi lemak. Well, of course it does comes with a side dish.
Being Malaysians staying in England now, we challenged ourselves by making our very own nasi lemak. It is not too difficult to get all the ingredients here. Just go to the nearest Chinese store, and you will have all of it there.
- Rice
- Coconut Milk
- Salt
- Water
- Ginger
- Pandan leaves (if you have)
Ingredients for preparing the rice:
- Dried chilis
- Onions
- Garlic
- Sugar and Salt
- Anchovies (if you have)
Ingredients for preparing the sambal:
- Nuts aka Kacang
- Cucumber (we do not have it, so we replaced it with tomatoes)
Serving:
It is easy to prepare the rice. Just add rice, coconut milk, salt, some water (if you are on a diet), ginger and pandan leaves in a rice pot and cook it.
To prepare the sambal, blend the dried chilies, some onions and some garlics together. Add some water. Next, fry the onions until it is almost ready and add in the blended chili paste. Lastly, add sugar and salt until you are satisfied with the taste.
To serve, place everything neatly on a flat plate and serve it warm.
