Oxford City - Christ Church College - Part 1

Posted by Apple Foodees On October - 20 - 2009

Oxford City houses the top University in the United Kingdom, The Oxford University and following very closely behind is the famous Cambridge University. The Christ Church, where thirteen (13) British Prime Ministers were educated is a widely known place and its popularity were further increased when the college was used as one of the site for the filming of the movie Harry Porter.

Christ Church Main Door Entry

Tom Tower was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1682 and is the main entrance for the members of Oxford University. Visitors are not allowed to enter from this entrance though.

Main Entrance

There is another side entrance at the Meadow Building. From the Tom Tower, walk along the side and through the side gate to that building. As you walk to the Meadow Building you will be greeted by a beautiful garden famously known as the War Memorial Garden.

Garden 1

The Christ Church Memorial Garden was laid out in 1926 to commemorate college members who fell in the First World War (1916-1918).

Garden 2

The standard fee for an adult is £6.00 whereas for a student (with student card) or child (age between 5 - 17 years), the ticket fee is £4.50.

Signboard

I am sure you will recognise the hall here if you had watched the movie Harry Porter. Look at the huge windows along the hall way.

Hall 1

As you walk along the hall, there are names crafted on the floor. Not sure what is it all about, but I guess it was there to commemorate those who had contributed to the college.

Hall 2

The view in the Oxford’s Cathedral is magnificient. The ceiling here was actually built in the 15th Century. Look how strong it is today.

Christ Church 11

If you come at the right time, you may get the opportunity to listen to the world-famous choir who sings regularly at the daily services.

Christ Church 10

This Church has been a site of religious worship since the 7th century. The present cathedral as you can see here was built in the 12th century.

Christ Church 9

It is amazing to see such a beautiful cathedral and its properly kept, protected and still in use until today. Words cannot describe how I feel when I step into this place. It’s like going back to the past, a few hundred years before I was born.

Christ Church 8

This is a better view to get to know the size of the cathedral. Just compare the size of the building with the visitors.

Christ Church 7

Enough said, let the pictures do the talking. Below are some random shots I took in the Cathedral.
